Symmetry Exhibit 2022

Finding balance today is much harder than it was 2 years ago. When the pandemic hit everything was thrown off and it seems as though the ups and downs will never end. The thing that has kept me sane is creating, exploring, and making.

The first few months of the pandemic, I was teaching a project in ART 248 (Design Tools) called Mirror, Mirror where students had to create a symmetrical design in Adobe Illustrator. Because the class had moved online, I made a simulation video where I created a design to help students see the potential of the project. That video sparked a series of designs that helped me through the start of the pandemic.

Two years later, and I’ve done three variations on the theme of Symmetry. This final variation (maybe) uses collage for two reasons: 1. There is an unpredictable quality about how collages come together which is exciting and stimulating. 2. I had to use my hands and for an artist and designer who works pretty much exclusively on the computer, I needed something both challenging and refreshing.

In this exhibition, I created mirror images down a center axis which creates pure symmetry and balance. The work emphasizes type, shadow, color, and material. It was created with play, experimentation, and loud music. The work is bright, dynamic, and hopeful which highlights the focus of the exhibit: That we all need balance, optimism, and fun in our lives.

Each piece is printed on 36 inch by 36 inch aluminum composite sheets and have French cleats for hanging. Pieces are for sale for $350. Contact me for purchase information.

Special thanks to Andy Dwyer at Harlan Graphics for helping and facilitating the printing on aluminum composite sheets. This couldn't have happened without you. Also, Thanks to Cassandra Stella-West for the beautiful photography of the work.
